Brief Guard is a drafting and verification workspace for legal practice. The material you bring to it — case files, drafts, matter records — is privileged working product, and we treat it that way.
What we store
- Your account details: name, e-mail address and firm name.
- The matters, documents, uploaded case files and notes you create in the workspace.
- Audit records of matter and document lifecycle events, kept so you can trace changes.
What we send to third parties
Drafting and verification call AI model providers and the Indian Kanoon judgment corpus. Only the text needed for the specific operation is transmitted, and it is not used by us to train models. No advertising or analytics trackers run inside the workspace.
For the citation check (Indian Kanoon), what leaves is the citation string — the judgment reference itself, such as “(2019) 4 SCC 210” — and, where a reference is name-shaped, the case-name terms as they appear in your text, because looking a judgment up by name requires sending the name. For that check, your document body, your uploaded record and your matter knowledge are not sent.
Drafting research is different, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. When the Draft Studio looks for authorities on your issues, the search query is composed from your matter — so it can carry party names, places, dates and the proposition you are arguing. Those queries go to Indian Kanoon. If that matters for a particular matter, use the citation check on its own, or run offline (below).
Citation extraction and grounding are performed by an AI model provider, and for those steps the text of the document being checked is sent to that provider. It is not used to train models. This is the step that reads your filing to find the citations in it, so it needs the text; the case-law lookup described above does not, and does not get it.
If a matter is sensitive enough that no part of it may leave your deployment, run Brief Guard in offline / air-gapped mode: citation extraction falls back to the local parser, grounding abstains, and neither your document body nor any party name reaches an external source. Setting the model provider to none achieves the same for the AI step alone, leaving only the citation and case-name lookup.
Case law is powered by IKanoon (Indian Kanoon), which supplies the live judgment data behind existence and good-law checks.
Some of these third parties may process data outside India. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 permits this except to a country the Central Government specifically restricts; we do not send data to any restricted destination.
How long we keep it
We keep your account details, matters and documents for as long as your account is active. Deleting a matter removes it, its documents and its derived records immediately (see Your control, below). Audit records of who did what to a matter or document are kept for as long as that matter or document exists — the same reason a physical file note isn’t thrown out just because the file has gone quiet.
Your rights
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to:
- See a summary of the personal data we hold about you and how it has been processed.
- Have inaccurate or incomplete personal data corrected or updated.
- Have personal data erased once it is no longer needed for the purpose it was collected for — except where we must keep it (billing records, or an audit trail a professional- conduct rule requires us to retain).
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting anything already done lawfully before the withdrawal.
- Nominate another individual to exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become incapacitated.
- Register a complaint with us and, if it goes unresolved, with the Data Protection Board of India.
To exercise any of these, write to contact@ascendons.com.
Your control
Deleting a matter cascades to its documents, uploaded files and derived records. You can export any document at any time in standard formats. To remove an account entirely, write to us and we will erase it along with everything it owns.
Grievance Officer
In accordance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, our Grievance Officer for data-protection complaints can be reached at contact@ascendons.com. We aim to acknowledge a grievance promptly and resolve it within the timeframe the Act prescribes.
